SOUTH POINT — Slow starts, fast finishes. That seems to be the formula so far this season for the South Point Lady Pointers soccer team.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Pointers put up four goals in the second half to beat the Portsmouth West Lady Senators 4-0 on Monday.
“Once again, we came out of the gates a little slow but I felt we controlled the entire game,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Zach Jenkins.
“Portsmouth West had a couple of chances but out defense stood up to the challenge and was able to contain them. Our offense was relentless tonight. We just had trouble putting the ball in the back of the net.”
Kylee Ellison scored an unassisted goal at the 43-minute mark of the second half as South Point snapped the 0-0 deadlock.
Ellison got her second goal just a minute later with an assist from Bridgette Aylsworth.
It took just another minute to make it 3-0 as Sarah Roach scored with an assist by Emilee Whitt.
“Neele Bennje, Sarah Roach, Julie Holder and Emily Byrd did a solid job in crashing the goal and making their goalie be secure with the ball,” said Jenkins.
Emily Byrd capped the scoring with a goal at the 52-minute mark as Ellison got the assist.
“Our defense played great all night long. KeeKee Montgomery, Kylee Riggs, Grace Simpson, Kara Taylor, Kate Mundy, Madison Workman and Aysiah Sharp all cycle in at the defensive spots. We tried to sub frequently in an effort to save legs for (Tuesday’s) big OVC game with Fairland,” said Jenkins.
South Point visits Fairland on Tuesday.
