Showcase for the county

In just two days, the Lawrence County Fair will be here again.

Pre-fair events are set for tomorrow, but the festivities kick off in full on Sunday, with the 4-H parade at noon, followed by opening ceremonies and the crowning of the fair queen and princess at 1 p.m.

This year, the fair will host some new additions, such as Tuesday’s Family Fun Day, in which children 12 and under can get in all day for $5 to enjoy things such as rides, balloons, clowns, face painting and multiple performances that day from the Cincinnati Circus.

While the fair provides entertainment for all, its main focus is to serve as a showcase for 4-H members from throughout the county.

Its livestock competitions allows the children and teens to present their animals to judges, where they are judged, not just for the animals, but for showmanship skills in presenting and talking about them.

And, with the concluding auctions on July 14, 4-H members are able to make a profit from their hard work.

4-H helps to instill values and skills in these young farmers, and much work goes into the fair by its Extension Office at The Ohio State University.

We commend Rachael Fraley and all at the office who work to put the week’s events on, as well as chairman Randy Lambert and the fair board and all involved, and wish them a successful week this year.
