Couple found dead of apparent gunshot wounds
SOUTH POINT— South Point police found a couple deceased in their residence Monday evening, located at 314 Third St. W., after completing a welfare check at the location due to family and friends not being able to make contact with them.
James and Rhonda McKeny, both 58, died of apparent gunshot wounds, South Point Police Chief Chris Mahjer said.
“Officers were called to the residence at around 7:30 p.m. Monday evening for a well being check at that address due to family and friends not being able to make contact with them over the weekend,” he said. “And Rhonda’s daughter, who lives in West Virginia, said that her mom (Rhonda) usually picks the kids up on Sundays, and she didn’t.”
After officers spoke with a neighbor and their local pastor, the decision was made to enter the home, where the couple was found.
He also added that the couple’s vehicles were outside of the home and unlocked.
“We made entry into the home at approximately 8 p.m.,” Mahjer said. “And based on the evidence and information collected by the South Point Police Department and the coroner’s office, there are indications that this was a murder-suicide with James McKeny being the aggressor.”
Mahjer said that at this point, the investigation of the incident is completed.
