Hornets, Jones get past Panthers, 13-8

COAL GROVE — Maybe people think 13 is an unlucky number, but it must have been good for the Coal Grove Hornets.
The Hornets won 13-8 as they had 13 hits to help overcome nine errors in an Ohio Valley Conference win over the Chesapeake Panthers on Monday.
Jeb Jones pitched a six-hitter for the win and went 4-4 at the plate with a double and five runs batted in for Coal Grove (8-5, 6-5).
Sam Angelo was 3-5 and Tait Matney 2-2 for the Hornets.
Bretton Martin went 2-4 with a double and two RBI for the Panthers.
The Panthers led 3-0 after top of the second inning but Coal Grove came back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Nate Harmon walked, Evan Gannon singled, Cory Borders hit into a force play, Matney walked and Jordan Case had an RBI single.
Two more runs scored on an outfield error and Sam Angelo singled in Case to cap the rally.
The Hornets made it 5-3 in the fourth when Matney, Angelo and Jones all singled.
The Panthers got three runs in the top of the fifth to lead 6-5.
Kelton Jones was safe on an error, Evan Burcham doubled and Josh Henson and Zach Wright each hit sacrifice flies. Bryce Depriest then reached on an error and scored when Tyler Eddy was safe on an error.
But the Hornets rallied with six runs in the fifth.
Borders singled, Matney walked and Case was safe on an error for a run. Angelo singled to load the bases and Jones singled home two runs.
Darin Bloomfield followed with a two-run double, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Coal Grove added two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Borders walked, Matney singled and Jones doubled them home.
Chesapeake kept battling and scored twice in the seventh.
Henson reached on an error, Wright singled, Depriest hit into a fielder’s choice, Eddy hit by pitch and Martin hit a two-run double.
Coal Grove hosts Gallipolis on Tuesday. Chesapeake hosts Lucasville Valley on Wednesday.
