PORTSMOUTH — The early bird gets the worm and the early scoring team seems to get the win.
The South Point Pointers scored all their runs in the first two innings as they blanked the Portsmouth Trojans 12-0 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.
Jonathon Henline pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and four walks to get the win.
The Pointers (9-1, 5-1) had 13 hits with Brody Blackwell going 3-4 with a run batted in, Douglas Shaffer 3-4 with two RBI and Drew Smith was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI.
“We hit the ball well early. Shaffer and Blackwell had three hits each. Everyone in the lineup contributed to the win offense,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
“Henline pitched a really good game for the shutout.”
The Pointers came out hot and scored nine runs in the first inning.
Blackwell and Shaffer singled, Henline walked and Drake McClure was safe on an error for a run.
A wild pitched scored Shaffer.
Ben Walls walked and Smith singled to drive in a run. Brycen McCann walked, Blackwell and Shaffer both singled again, Travis Dillon walked and Henline hit into a force out as a run scored.
South Point got three more runs in the second inning.
Smith had a one-out triple and scored on McCann’s hit. Blackwell single, Shaffer hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored and Dillon singled in the final run.
South Point hosts East Carter Thursday and Portsmouth Friday.
