PORTSMOUTH — If the Coal Grove Hornets were needing a tune-up game for their rematch against Ironton, they appear to be a fine-tuned machine.
The Hornets used a smothering defense to beat the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans 57-19 on Tuesday.
Nine different players scored with Jeb Jones and Cory Borders scoring 10 points each to lead Coal Grove (14-5).
Sam Angelo added nine points while Damian Jiles came off the bench to score eight.
Ben Mader scored 11 points for Notre Dame (2-18).
Coal Grove took a 14-6 first quarter lead as Angelo scored six points.
The lead went to 32-11 at the half with Jones scoring six points in the second quarter while Borders and Angelo each hit a 3-pointer.
Mader had all five of the Titans’ points.
The Hornets extended the lead to 48-17 after three quarters as Borders and Jiles each hit a 3-pointer and scored five points. Aaron Music added four points.
Coal Grove held the Titans to just two points in the fourth quarter.
Jiles made another trey and Nate Harmon scored four points for the Hornets.
Coal Grove hosts Ironton on Wednesday and visits South Point on Friday in Ohio Valley Conference games and then host Sciotoville East on Saturday for senior night.
