Keep the honors coming

On Friday, the Wyngate at RiversEdge hosted its third annual Veterans Day observance.

It was one of many to take place throughout the county, including those offered by several Lawrence County schools.

The Wyngate’s event is particularly moving as, at the senior living community in Rome Township, many of the residents are veterans, having served in World War II, Korea and other conflicts, as well as non-combat duty positions.

Featuring members of the VFW and American Legion, as well as a performance from Fairland High School’s choir, the Wyngate’s observance allows people to honor and show respect to veterans who are retired and living at the home, giving them a chance to interact with the community around them.

Along with events such as those that took place at Ironton High, South Point High, Burlington Elementary, South Point Elementary and others, it is good to know that people took the time to thank veterans and service personnel for their sacrifice and also honored those who paid the ultimate price.

We commend all who organized and took part in veterans events this past week and urge everyone to continue to thank those who served.

Veterans events will not stop with the holiday. At the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast on the Industrial Parkway near Grayson, an observance of the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor is set for 1 p.m. Dec. 7 and will feature a local survivor of the “date which will live in infamy.”

Also, in the coming weeks, several charities in the area will be collecting for Veterans for the holidays and these efforts will be covered, as they are annually, by the Tribune.

If you know of any efforts in your community, please contact The Tribune, so we can help spread the word.

We strongly encourage everyone to contribute and to keep up honor veterans throughout the year.
