Ohio U.S. senators lead way

Last week, President Donald Trump declared the opioid epidemic a national emergency.

Ohio has been ground zero of the epidemic and its two U.S. senators have been at the forefront of the effort to counter it.

Republican Senator Rob Portman has commended Trump’s opioid commission for releasing a set of recommendations to address the epidemic.

Portman’s office noted that the report specifically endorses two bipartisan bills authored by the senator, including the Synthetics Trafficking & Overdose Prevention (STOP) Act, which would help stop dangerous synthetic drugs from being shipped into our country via the postal system, and the

Prescription Drug Monitoring Act, which would help stop overprescribing.

Democrat Sherrod Brown also supported the president’s declaration and asked that it be followed up by action.

This, Brown’s bipartisan bill, the INTERDICT Act, was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, and will go before the Senate. The legislation would provide U.S. Customs and Border Protection with additional high-tech screening equipment and lab resources to detect fentanyl before it enters the U.S.

Brown’s bill is also supported by Portman and Brown is supporting the STOP Act. Both bills are endorsed by law enforcement and are designed to work together. Brown’s office said the senator has also secured a commitment from Trump’s nominee to lead CBP to work with Brown on the bill’s goals.

Despite their political differences, Brown and Portman are working together effectively to lead the way in the fight against opioids and deserve commendation.

Here’s hoping that their fellow members of Congress are inspired to join them in their mission and will continue this bipartisanship on other issues.
