SOUTH POINT — The South Point Board of Education hosted a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the subject of drug testing for student athletes.
Superintendent Mark Christian said the session was to answer questions from the community regarding four athletes who did not pass their initial drug tests.
“Some people were saying we were just going to let them play anyway,” Christian said, noting this was false.
He said all student athletes are tested, in every sport.
“It’s not just a select sample,” he said.
Of the 198 students recently tested, he said nine had results that were questionable. However, he said five of those were likely due to prescription situations, in which case, students will be allowed to produce a list of prescribed medications.
Of the remaining four, Christian said, it was matter of “for now, innocent until proven guilty,” and said that the district was waiting for further results, which should come shortly.
Christian said, in order to play again, student athletes who fail to pass a test must attend drug counseling and are required to miss at least 30 percent of the season.
He said about 15-20 people attended Wednesday’s meeting.
