SOUTH POINT — The grand opening of a new Big Lots store near South Point is set for Oct. 13.

A celebration is set for 8:30 a.m. at the store, which is located in the old Kmart building on U.S. 52. The department store closed in 2009.

Crews have been working the past few months to renovate the store, which was constructed in 1970s and was one of the first major retail developments in the region.

Big Lots, based out of Columbus, has nearly 1,500 stores in 48 states and sells a variety of merchandise, much of which is close out from overstocked items.

The Big Lots moving to South Point is its current Huntington store, which is set to close.

A Planet Fitness is also set to open next door in the same building at an unspecified date.
