GALLIPOLIS — The Chesapeake Panthers won the battle and lost the war.
The Panthers outgained the Gallipolis Blue Devils and shut down their passing game but still came up short in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday, 34-21.
Chesapeake (3-1, 0-1) lost for the first time despite having 330 total yards to 275 for Gallipolis (2-2, 1-0).
“We didn’t play well enough to win and they did. We have to get back to work,” said Panthers’ coach Andy Clark.
“We outgained them but we just didn’t make plays. They were improved up front. We didn’t tackle well. It was one of those nights.”
The Blue Devils took a 6-0 lead on an 11-yard run by Justin Campbell with 8:54 left in the first quarter. Campbell ran 20 times for 118 yards.
Campbell had a 7-yard scoring run early in the second quarter and Justin McClelland ran for the conversion and it was 14-0.
Chesapeake came back to get within 14-7 on a 7-yard run by Kamren Harless and Dalton Nida’s conversion kick with 2:41 left in the half.
But the Blue Devils had a long kickoff return that set up a 4-yard touchdown pass from McClelland to Cory Call and it was 22-7 with 10 seconds on the clock.
Campbell had a 1-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter and it was 28-7.
Chesapeake got within 28-14 on a 2-yard run by Logan Walsh with 11:07 to play.
But Gallipolis got some breathing room when McClelland broke free on a fourth down play and ran 38 yards for a touchdown with 5:35 left and the lead was 34-14.
Browning quickly answered with a 64-yard gallop and the Panthers were within 34-21 but they could get no closer.
Browning ran 21 times for 224 yards and was 2-of-7 passing for 42 yards.
Next Friday Chesapeake visits Coal Grove while Gallipolis hosts Portsmouth.
