NEW BOSTON — There was a good half and a bad half. The good half was better than the bad one.
Drew Smith had two goals and an assist and the South Point Pointers rallied in the second half and beat the New Boston Tigers 5-3 in a soccer game on Thursday.
“We didn’t come out ready. We played better in the second half,” said Pointers’ coach Zane Joy.
South Point (3-4-1) scored first on an unassisted goal by Smith eight minutes into the game.
New Boston tied the game on a goal by Kade Conley at the 23:00 mark.
The next three points came quickly.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead when Kyle McQuithy scored at the 33:00 mark.
One minute later the Pointers Drew Lilly scored with an assist from Smith.
New Boston also used one minute to answer as Conley got his second unassisted goal and it was 3-2 at the half.
But the Pointers took over in the second half.
Tyler Lilly used an assist by John Overstreet to score with 42:00 on the clock.
Smith scored his second goal with an assist from Luke Tyree and the Pointers had the lead at the 67:00 mark.
Tyree then added an insurance goal at 78:00 with an assist from Isaiah Nease.
Goalkeeper Brody Blackwell had five saves for the Pointers. Kyle Sexton had nine saves for New Boston.
The Pointers visit Chesapeake on Tuesday. The girls’ game is 5:30 p.m. and the boys play at 7:30.
