A much-needed option

For many seniors, making ends meet in retirement can be difficult, especially given the circumstances that one may face as one enters their golden years.

Whether due to surviving mostly on Social Security or facing hardship because of the death of a spouse, incomes for seniors are often lower than what is needed.

Which is why it is important that living options for those on fixed incomes are available.

On Friday, a ribbon-cutting took place for the new Proctor’s Landing senior living complex, located across from the Lawrence County Fairgrounds in Rome Township.

The building contains 56 units, serving those 55 and older, with incomes between 30-60 percent of the media in Lawrence County.

Options include 19 one-bedroom units at 664 square feet and 37 two-bedroom units at 857 square feet. Amenities in each unit include Energy Star-rated windows, lighting and carpeting.

The building also features a large community room with a full kitchen, an outdoor patio, a community garden, raised planter beds, a computer room, a fitness center, a game room, common laundry rooms, tenant storage areas and a space for adult bicycle storage.

And the location will be near one of the region’s sites for senior activities, with the Sybene-Chesapeake Senior Center, set to move into a new site at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds. Construction is expected to begin next year.

We applaud the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization (CAO), PIRHL Developers, LLC and all who helped to bring about the construction of the facility, and wish its residents many happy years in their new home.
