Village struggles to find a location for holiday display
Coal Grove fire chief Gary Sherman told the village council on Wednesday evening that unless they can find an appropriate place to let off fireworks, he will not sign off on a Fourth of July display this year. Sherman explained that the fireworks require a clear perimeter, based on the diameter of the fireworks shell being used.
Based on the space restrictions within the village, he continued, they are largely limited to shells that are no larger than four inches. Any shells larger than six inches, he explained, would not only require a larger space, but would also have to be set off with computerized electronic ignition by state statute.
The village is also limited by visibility, he said. While there are locations that they could use with a sufficient clear area to prevent sparks from landing on structures, the fireworks might not be visible from the park if these locations were used.
“We are bound by state laws (regarding safety),” Sherman told council. “When it’s my signature that goes on that state permit, everything is going to follow the law… (or it’s) not going to happen.”
Village council also heard public complaints about overgrown weeds on various properties, and tabled discussion on the purchase of new electronic water meter readers.
In legislative action, the council moved to enter into second readings on three separate ordinances.
Ordinance 2017-16, relating to garbage and trash in the village, 2017-18, amending compensation and benefits for the Coal Grove Police Department, and 2017-05, authorizing the payment of unused sick leave time.
Council also discussed plans for mosquito treatment before entering executive session to discuss complaints against an official.
