Ironton’s newest store is having a grand opening today.

Gypsy Hearts, a clothing store owned by three nurses, had its soft opening last Saturday.
Sisters Angel Hall and Brea Lewis, and their mother, Beverly Mattie, own it. The three had kicked around the idea for a clothing store for a long time.

“We ran the idea back and forth for several years, that we wanted to have a women’s boutique in Ironton, something close to home,” Hall said. “There aren’t very many options around here.”

Then, about three months ago, Lewis brought up the idea again.

“She said, “Let’s just do it,” Hall recalled. “I said let’s just do it, so we did.”

They purposely wanted a downtown Ironton location and found a building at 106 South Third Street that had recently been renovated after years of being a beauty salon.

“We would love to see our town build back up and be prosperous, the way it used to be,” Hall said. “Instead of griping about the problem, I guess, we are trying to be proactive and get more business flowing down here to help our other stores and merchants.” “We want to make Ironton great again,” said Lewis.

Hall remembers coming downtown with her grandmother on Saturdays and being excited to go to the Kresge.

“I loved the food, I loved the atmosphere, the workers,” Hall said. “I love that small, close knit hometown feel. There is nothing like your own little hometown. I would like to see that again.”

Gypsy Hearts is right across the street from the old department store building.

The boutique carries shoes, hats, purses, sunglasses, makeup and jewelry. The clothing includes leggings, dresses, tank tops, cardigans, sweaters, pants, skirts and tops in junior sizes, misses sizes and plus sizes.

The makeup line includes LipSense, MakeSense foundation, BlushSense and other products by SeneGence. Right now is the testing phase for the items they carry. “Some are trial and error, probably. Some we picked just for how they looked,” Hall said. “It was things we’d like for ourselves. A lot of it was what our friends said they were looking for in clothing.”

The business has been pretty steady for being open for just a week. “People have been very positive, a lot of good feedback,” Hall said. “They like the styles and the colors we offer.

They said they are excited to know we have more products coming in.”

They said they hope to get a new shipment of goods in once a week to keep the stock fresh. “I have four shipments already on their way here,” Hall said.

At today’s grand opening, every person that comes in can enter into a drawing for a chance to win store credit.

As for the name “Gypsy Hearts,” Hall said they have always loved anything boheminan. “Especially that type of clothing,” she said. “And we like the idea that gypsy hearts are wild, untamed and free, and can go where they want. That’s kind of how we are.”
