Group effort gives Lady Tigers 7-1 win

It wasn’t so much about getting nine hits but when the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers got them.
The Lady Tigers were able to group their hits together and beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 7-1 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
“It was good to get another win tonight,” said Ironton coach Missy Fields. “The girls are hitting the ball pretty good and we connected a few together tonight.”
Mary Beth Burton got tehe win as she struck out seven, walked one, gave up seven hits and an earned run.
“Mary Beth Burton had a solid game tonight with seven strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter,” said Fields. “We’re still working on team chemistry but I am pleased with our progress. We have a big week ahead.”
Ironton took a 1-0 lead in the third when M’Kenzie McMaser walked, Zjaytia Black-Mize was hit by a pitch and Kenzie Cremeens reached on an error.
Portsmouth got its run in the fourth to tie the game.
Andi Queen, Bailey Horsley and Sraskel all singled to load the bases and Eliza Gullett hit into a force play to score Queen.
But Ironton came back to take the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Burton and Taiya Hamlet singled with one out. After a force play, McMaster reached on an error and Hayley Stevens followed with a two-run single.
Ironton tacked on four runs in the sixth.
Hamlet was safe on an error and McMaster had an RBI double. Stevens followed with a double but the runner was thrown out at home.
Riley Schreck singled in a run and then Cremeens and Aley Carmon singled for a run and an error scored the final run.
Stevens and Cremeens both went 2-4 with a double and two RBI.
Queen — who went 2-3 at the plated — went the distance and took the loss.
On Monday, Ironton hosts Gallipolis and Portsmouth visits Fairland.
