Errors costly as Panthers fall to Trojans

PORTSMOUTH — An error is something unintentionally done wrong.
So what is the definition of six errors?
The Panthers outhit Portsmouth 12-6 but were guilty of six errors and lost 8-6 to the Trojans in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday that sent five and one-half innings.
“The one good thing was our pitching was good and we had 12 hits. But when you make six errors which shows you how important defense is,” said Panthers’ coach Justin Davis.
Josh Hansen walked, Dalton Nida singled and Bryce Depriest reached on an error and it was 1-0 in the top of the first.
Portsmouth tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Ty Oliver singled, stole second, when to third when Mikey Potts infield pop up dropped untouched next to a fielder, and scored when Potts got caught in a rundown.
Chesapeake regained the lead in the top of the third with a run when Nida and Depriest singled and Evan Burcham reached on an error.
The Trojans used four errors and hits by Parker Johnson and Vincent Schwanberger to score six runs in the third inning.
The Panthers got two runs back in the fourth inning.
Tyler Eddy and Jamey Mills singled to start the inning. After a double play, Casey McComas had an RBI single, then stole second and third and scored on Hansen’s hit.
The Trojans got a run back in the fifth and Chesapeake came back to get two in the sixth.
Kelton Jones and McComas singled and Hansen hit into a force play as a run scored. Nida reached on an error and Depriest had an RBI single.
The rain began to fall and forced the game to be called.
Chesapeake was to play Ironton on Friday and Green on Saturday.
