SOUTH POINT— The South Point Pointers dominated in all aspects of the game against the Chesapeake Panthers Friday evening, coasting to a 61-34 OVC win.
The Pointers jumped out to an 18-0 lead to start the game, and saw two players reach double figures, led by senior Logan Wade, who totaled 13 points as well as 10 boards.
Sophomore Tayshaun Fox and senior Elijah Adams finished the game with 10 points and eight points respectively in one half of play. Fox also dished out four assists and Adams added two assists and two rebounds. Junior Jared Whitt chipped in eight points and three boards for the Pointers.
“We started the game quick and got easy buckets. Our defense forced them to make tough shots, which is what we needed to do,” South Point head coach Travis Wise said. “We started fast and stayed on it.”
The Pointers doubled up the Panthers on the glass, racking up 31 total rebounds as a team to the 15 Chesapeake pulled down.
“We’re always stressing rebounding,” Wise said. “We play a zone, which sometimes puts you into a tough spot, but when you rebound, you can get out and run and we were able to do that.”
The Pointers (10-5, 6-3) suffocating defense made it difficult on Chesapeake (3-8, 2-6) to score all game.
South Point led 23-4 after the first quarter, and carried a 42-11 lead into the break.
Leading the way for the Panthers was junior Cole Mills, who scored 10 points, including two triples in the final quarter. Freshman Austin Jackson recorded nine points, junior Zach Wright added seven and senior Casey McComas scored all five of his points in the third quarter.
“We knew they had two or three good shooters that we had to locate in the zone, which we did,” Wise said. “That forced them into tough shots.”
After halftime, South Point rested some of their starters, getting their reserves some minutes.
Coming off the bench for the Pointers, senior Cody Runyon led the way with nine points, including two threes in the third quarter.
After three quarters of play, the Pointers led 55-21 before finishing the game at 61-34 at the final buzzer.
Chesapeake head coach Ryan Davis said that although his team is young, he was disappointed in the way they played Friday evening.
“We’re young and we’re inexperienced. We have some good kids who can compete when they work hard, but tonight we didn’t come focused to work hard,” Davis said.
“South Point’s good enough that when you do that, they’ll bury you, and that’s what happened tonight.”
South Point hosted Russell, Ky. on Saturday and hosts Portsmouth on Tuesday, while Chesapeake played Portsmouth Saturday and entertains Rock Hill on Tuesday.
