Be aware of tax scams

While there are a couple of months left before the filing deadline, many are weary just at the thought of gathering the needed documentation for getting their taxes completed.
While that stress can be overwhelming, those wishing to prey on others with tax scams have become commonplace.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) warns citizens that several tactics are being used in these scams, with the most common being telephone, email and identity theft scams.
Each year, taxpayers are scammed out of millions of dollars, and understanding what to look for can help prevent residents from becoming victims.
The IRS reminds taxpayers that they will never do the following:
• Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes.
• Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
• Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
If you are having your taxes done through a preparer, be sure to check their credentials before providing any personal information.
Taking these extra steps now can save a lot of additional headaches laters.
