NEW PHILADELPHIA — The Fairland Dragons nearly wore themselves out in the first quarter.
Fairland erupted for 26 points in the first quarter en route to an 80-52 spanking of the Sugarcreek Garaway Pirates on Friday in the Dover-Phila Credit Union Holiday Shootout.
“We got off to a great start and then went a little flat,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed. “But we came back strong in the second half.
“We just got a lot of contributions from everyone. We were pretty balanced on offense. It was a good team effort.”
The unbeaten Dragons (7-0) were led by Player of the Game Luke Thomas with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Isaiah Howell had another big game with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. Gunner Scott scored 15 points and Kollin Van Horn added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
Ty Hamsher scored 12 points, Malik Shaffer 11 and Ethan Roden 10 for the Pirates.
Howell scored 9 points as the Dragons bolted to a 26-10 first quarter lead.
The offense slowed to just 8 points in the second quarter as Garaway cut the deficit to 34-23.
But Thomas scored 9 points in the third quarter as Fairland extended the lead to 57-39.
The Dragons outscored the Pirates 23-13 in the fourth quarter to win going away.
Fairland hosts Coal Grove on Tuesday.
