The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers may not have been crisp, but they certainly burned the Gallipolis Blue Angels.
Ironton forced 41 turnovers en route to a 61-32 Ohio Valley Conference win on Monday.
“We played hard but it wasn’t crisp. Any time you force a team into 41 turnovers you’re doing a good job defensively, so I can’t fault them on that. We just have to get things more crisp, more sharp,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.
Sydney Webb scored 20 points to lead three players on double figures for Ironton (3-1, 2-1). Lexi Wise had 12 points and 8 rebounds while Lexie Arden got 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Lydia Hannan had 8 rebounds.
“I thought Lexie Arden did a really good job controlling the paint both through her blocked shots and rebounding,” said Graham.
“Alyssa Lewis played really good defense on (Alex Barnes) on the top of the defense. Lexi Wise was able to run in the second quarter. I thought Lydia Hannan was very active inside.”
Ironton had 10 assists as Wise had 5 and Arden 3. Webb had 8 steals and Arden 5 to lead the defense.
“We had some really nice looking passes out there,” said Graham. “Sydney Webb was all over the floor. When she got a foul at the start of the fourth quarter and (assistant coach) Greg Arden said that was her first foul I couldn’t believe it. I felt like she was everywhere.”
Carly Shriver had 11 points and 7 rebounds while Adrienne Jenkins got 10 points and 6 rebounds for Gallipolis (2-3, 0-3).
Ironton led 8-2 to start the game. Jenkins hit one of two foul shots and it was 8:3 at the 2:36 mark.
Ironton scored 6 straight points to end the quarter and three straight baskets by Webb gave Ironton a 26-3 lead.
Shriver made a layup at the 4:56 mark to end the Gallipolis drought.
Ironton went on an 8-4 run to begin the second half at it was 41-15. The Lady Fighting Tigers led by as many as 24 points in the first half and 29 in the second half including the final score.
Ironton plays at Ashland, Ky., on Thursday.
