Be vigilant for holidays

Shopping during the holiday season can bring joy and a smile to your face,
whether that’s because you have found just the right gift or got a great deal.
However, that smile can quickly become a frown if someone commits a crime and steals that gift out of your car, or potentially, right off the front porch.
Unfortunately, while the season of giving is a favorite for many of the right reasons, criminals will also seek to ruin the season.
Nearly every year, we see an increase in burglaries throughout the region. It is important to be more vigilant during this time to protect property like your home and vehicles, and also your family.
In most cases, the crimes committed during the holiday season are a combination of desire and need.
This is because some who steal from others feel pressure if they cannot provide for their family. However, does this mean that stealing for this reason should be OK? Absolutely not.
Deceiving and stealing from others should always be punished accordingly. There are far too many individuals, businesses and organizations within Lawrence County and around the region that are willing and able to help those who may need assistance during the holidays for criminals to steal from others for a toy or article of clothing.
We encourage anyone who feels that pressure, to please reach out to the many available options to get help with food, clothing or toys.
Ultimately, committing a crime and getting caught will make for a much harder holiday for you and your family.
Likewise, if residents see someone suspicious around a neighborhood, home or vehicle, please contact the proper authorities. Don’t try to approach or apprehend them yourself.
In the end, watching out for one another will make for a better holiday system for all.
