Event raises money for families in need
The fourth annual Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church Turkey Bowl flag football game is set for 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Rock Hill High School football field.
“We do this to raise money for families in the community who are in need this time of year,” Eric Bailey, youth director at the church, said. “We used to have it behind the church, but we outgrew that. This year, Rock Hill offered their football field.”
At the event, a basket will be passed around for people to give monetary donations, clothing or non-perishable food items.
Bailey said that along with Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, other local churches are involved in dividing up the donations for families in need as well.
“Myself and our pastor will get with other pastors when we count the money and donations to give away. We divide it up depending on how many need it,” Bailey said. “It’s not always equal, but it’s to fit the needs of each family.”
Due to the possibility of injury, Bailey said no one under the age of 18 is able to play in the flag football game, although everyone is welcome to enjoy the event.
The Rock Hill girls basketball team is assisting with the event, which is expected to wrap up around midnight.
“Anyone is welcome,” Bailey said. “It’s always a good time.”
