Man faces life in prison for sex crimes

The trial of a Chesapeake man accused of multiple sex crimes is set to begin on Nov. 7.
Franklin Woods, 34, of 227 Township Road 130A, appeared Wednesday for a hearing in Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Charles Cooper’s courtroom at which time he rejected a plea deal.
Woods was offered a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
The man was indicted in February on five counts of first-degree rape, four counts of fourth-degree gross sexual imposition, four counts of third-degree sexual imposition, three counts of second-degree sexual battery and one count of third-degree sexual battery. According to each charge in the indictment, there was only one victim and the crimes allegedly occurred from August 2010 through as late as Nov. 16. 2015. Several of the charges listed the victim as less than 13 years old.
The maximum penalty Woods faces if convicted at trial is life in prison without parole. The trial is scheduled to run Nov. 7-10.
In other cases:
• A trial date was set for defendant Tracy Ellis in the Sky Lake gambling case. The trial was set for Feb. 21-24.
• William Holley II, 23, of 14611 State Route 7, Proctorville, pleaded guilty to counts of fourth-degree receiving stolen property and third-degree harassment by an inmate. Cooper sentenced the man to four years community control sanctions under intensive supervised probation and drug treatment.
• Ronald Weaver, 41, of 3244 Frederick Road, Wheelersburg, pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree count of possession of drugs. Cooper sentenced the man to six months in prison.
• Shana Pinkerman, 32, of 2549 S. 12th St., Ironton, admitted CCS violations and was sentenced to 17 months in prison.
• Lewis Lambert, 43, of 236 County Road 3, Proctorville, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor counts of possession of drug abuse instruments and resisting arrest. Cooper set sentencing for Nov. 2.
• James Baker, 50, of 53 Private Drive 125, Chesapeake, was sentenced to 36 months in prison. He previously pleaded guilty to counts of third-degree intimidation, fourth-degree assault on a peace officer, fifth-degree vandalism, fifth-degree harassment by an inmate and misdemeanor attempted escape and resisting arrest.
• Michael Gustin, 53, of 917 McGovney Ave., Ironton, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree criminal non-support. Retired judge Richard Walton sentenced the man to four years CCS/ISP, 200 hours community service. The man was also ordered to pay $4,500.
• Ralph Viars, 30, of 3531 County Road 64, Willow Wood, was found guilty of a fifth-degree count of possession of drugs. The man was previously sentenced to treatment in lieu of conviction but was found to have violated the conditions of his program. Walton sentenced the man to six months in prison.
