Six area golfers advance to district

McDERMOTT — Maybe the teams didn’t do as well as hoped, but some individual golfers did well for themselves.
While local Division II boys and girls golf teams failed to advance, five boys and one girl qualified for the district tournament as they placed among the top individuals at the sectional tournaments on Tuesday.
The top five teams and five individuals not on the qualifying teams advance to the district. The girls take the top three individuals not on the top three teams.
In the boys’ sectional at the Portsmouth Elks, Rock Hill Redmen Logan Reed, Fairland Dragons Reece Bellville and Mihkail Auxier, South Point Pointers Beau Taylor and Ironton Fighting Tigers Mitchell Weisgarber all advanced to the district next Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Crown Hill Golf Course in Williamsport.
The top five teams who qualified for the district were Piketon at 304, Waverly 336, Gallipolis 342, Portsmouth West 363 and Portsmouth 374.
Fairland was sixth at 378, Ironton seventh with a 380 total followed by Rock Hill at 410, Wheelersburg 424, Minford 450, Wellston 464, Northwest 491, South Point 520 and River Valley did not have a team score.
The lone girl to advance was Coal Grove Hornets Alex Gillette. She will play on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Upper Landsdown Golf Course in Ashville.
Reed tied for fifth overall with Waverly’s Connor Heffner as each shot a 76. Reed had impressive rounds of 39 and 37.
Bellville was 11th overall with a 95 on rounds of 41 and 44. Auxier was 20th overall at 90 as he shot 41-49.
Taylor was in a five-way tie for 15th with an 83 as he went 45-43.
Weisgarber tied with Waverly’s Eric Heffner as each shot a 92. Weisgarber had identical rounds of 46.
Besides Weisgarber, Ironton’s Chandler Dodson had a 95 on rounds of 44 and 51, James Carter 96 on 47 and 49, Mason Slagel 97 on 51 and 46, and Trevor Hacker shot a 102 on rounds of 50 and 52.
For Fairland, Cameron Sheppard went 49 and 47 for a 96, Connor Franklin 60 and 47 for 107 and Mason Manns had two rounds of 54 for a 108.
Reed led the Rock Hill team while Jason Haywood had a 93 on rounds of 42 and 51, Austin Riddle a 118 on two 59s, and Chase Nelson went 62-61 for a 123 total.
South Point’s Ryan Fetty went 57 and 58 for a 115, Colton Napier 70 and 64 for 134 and Wyatt Thacker 102 and 87 at 189.
Gillette shot a 94 on rounds of 46 and 48. She won a playoff with Veronica Olaker of Greenfield McClain who had a 94 on rounds of 49 and 45. Both advance to the district.
Ironton’s Tyler Shelton tied for No. 13 overall with a 105 on rounds of 54-51.
West Union won the team championship. North Adams was second and Westfall third.
