SOUTH POINT — Just like a Golden Gloves boxing match, the South Point Lady Pointers scored points but couldn’t come up with a knockout.
The Lady Pointers battled hard but lost to the Portsmouth Lady Trojans on Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference volleyball game, 25-22, 21-25, 21-25 and 17-25.
“Tonight the girls fought for every point and rallied many times throughout the night, but we just couldn’t get the momentum to sing our way at crucial times,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Allen Perry.
Mackenzie Fugitt led the offense with 14 kills and a 70-percent kill efficiency. She also added six digs and three aces.
Senior libero Selena Marcum had 21 digs and a 100 percent serve receiving against a strong team. She also had one ace.
Brooklyn Badgett led the team with 22 assists.
“Mack (Fugitt) was swinging hard tonight. Marcum was also a standout player tonight,” said Perry.
The Lady Pointers picked up a win on Wednesday against Greenup County.
Sophomore Rachael Wheeler turned in an impressive performance for South Point with five blocks and four kills.
Fugitt led South Point with six serving aces while Marcum led the defense with 10 digs.
In the reserve match, the Lady Pointers beat Greenup 25-9, 25-11 and Portsmouth 25-18, 25-20.
South Point hosts Ashland on Monday and will participate in the annual Volley for a Cure match at Ironton on Tuesday.
Fans are asked to support both teams as they work together to raise money to donate to the St. Mary’s Pink Ribbon Fund.
