Second annual event at the Highlands Museum
ASHLAND, Ky. — For the second year, the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center is hosting its Highlanders HeroCon, showcasing comic books, super heroes, cosplay and card tournaments, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday at the museum.
“We really wanted to expand our programming lineup and have something for every member of the family. That’s why this year we have included more panels and speakers,” Emily Roush, education and marketing director at the museum, said. “We are also keeping the discovery center open for the duration of the event. This allows us to expand the children’s arts and crafts area and allow for a place for kids attending the event to play.”
Batman, Batgirl and the Batmobile from Heroes 4 Higher will be present at the Hero Con, along with comic book writer and creator Beau Smith and Portsmouth based comic book artist Michael Mayne as the guest speakers.
The event will also include vendors, a costume contest, cosplay question and answer panel and various card tournaments, sponsored by the Goblin Traders out of Ironton.
“One of my favorite parts of this event is getting to work with and know the different vendors,” Roush said. “We have a great selection of vendors from across the region.”
The costume contest will include an adult category for those 18 and older, and a youth category for those under 18. First place in each category will receive a $100 cash prize while second place will receive a $50 cash prize. First and second place winners will be awarded family memberships to the museum and HeroCon medals as well.
Admission to the HeroCon is $9 for adults, $6 for children 10 and under, $5 for all museum members and children under 2 are free. Presale tickets are available at the museum during regular business hours and the museum accepts cash, check and credit cards (Visa/MasterCard).
