Symmes Creek cleanup essential

There is so much to do in the Tri-State and since the area is on the Ohio River, that waterway is a treasure trove of recreation.

Yet so many do not appreciate what we have. But there is a dedicated group who does. That is the Symmes Creek Restoration Committee that since the 1970s has worked to clean out Symmes Creek to have it a waterway that is clear for those who enjoy grabbing a canoe or kayak and spending a few hours peacefully being in the water.

Unfortunately there are some who don’t look at Symmes Creek as a place for recreation, but as a dumping ground. They will throw trash, junk, even large items like mattresses and tires in the creek.

That is why the restoration committee should be commended for taking at least a Saturday each year to do a special cleanup.

This Saturday the committee will sponsor its canoe caper where volunteers show up at the Symmes Creek boat ramp at Chesapeake and launch canoes or kayaks and start cleaning up what other people have carefully and senselessly thrown out.

Each month on the first Monday the committee meets at the nature preserve at Lake Vesuvius to plan fun events and ways to improve the navigability of the creek.

These people could spend their time doing so many other things but choose to work to keep Symmes Creek as a valuable place for recreation.

Anyone who enjoys the waterways should show up to help keep Symmes Creek a clean place for recreation.
