Kudos to the community

Track and field Olympian Carl Lewis once said, “The best kids are going to become the best. But the best thing about it is that you’re going to learn lessons in playing those sports about winning and losing and teamwork and teammates and arguments and everything else that are going to affect you positively for the rest of your life.”
Whether you’re a fan of sports, certainly everyone can learn a thing or two about teamwork from the Fairland Youth Football League and the Rome Township Volunteer Fire Department. The two groups worked in tandem this past weekend to raise money for young member of the team, 13-year-old Cody Medley.
Medley, a diabetic, recently suffered from compilations from the disease and slipped into a diabetic coma.
Children, who have been friends with the boy for years, as well as the firefighters and other community members, showed up Saturday to help wash cars for donations to assist in the cost of Medley’s medical care. Dollar General donated the space and Pizza Hut donated lunch for those working.
It is tragic to see a young person’s life put on hold due to an illness, but it is always remarkable to see how the community comes together to help.
As Joe Brumfield, assistant chief of the fire department, said on Saturday, “Teamwork is nothing new to the volunteer fire service and youth sports programs where people have to work together to solve problems, overcome obstacles and achieve to win.
“Since Cody is known as a winner, we wanted to join his team and help him battle his illness.”
Those involved in this effort should be commended for their selfless attitudes and commitment to true teamwork.
