AID — Mercury Rising might have been a Bruce Willis movie, but it seemed to be what happened to the bats of the Green Bobcats on Wednesday.

Green banged out 14 hits in a 14-5 win over the Symmes Valley Vikings in their Southern Ohio Conference opener.

“Our bats warmed up with the weather,” said Green coach Dan McDavid. “We had contributions all through the lineup.”

Josh Karshner went the distance to get the win. He struck out eight, walked one and allowed six hits.

Karshner went 3-4 with a double to lead the offense. Trevor Carver was 2-3 with a double, Tayte Carver and Tyler Darnell 2-4 each and Tanner Kimbler 2-5 as 10 players got hits.

Chayden Renfroe got the loss as he went the first four-plus innings. He struck out six and walked four.

“Chayden didn’t throw bad, but we made some errors and didn’t hit the ball. But we’re young and we have six new starters,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe. “But give Green credit. They did a nice job.”

Cameron Meadows was 2-4 with a double and four runs batted in and Payton Hayes was 2-4 to lead the Vikings’ offense.

Karshner singled in a run as Green took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Bobcats (2-3, 1-0) got two runs in the third.

Rylee Maynard walked, stole second and Karshner had an RBI single. Darnell followed with an RBI single.

The Bobcats erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth to lead 11-0.

Trevor Carver walked, Tyler Johnson reached on an error, Darnell, Hunter Lewis, Kimbler and Tayte Carver all singled and Karshner doubled.

The Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Isaac McFann, Laykin Gothard and Hayes all singled for a run and Meadows had a two-run single.

Green added three runs in the seventh as Tayte Carver, Brayden Bush, Jacob McKenzie and Dakota Martin all singled.

The Vikings got two in the bottom of the inning when Gothard was hit by pitch, Hayes singled and Meadows doubled.

The two teams meet at Green on Friday.
