On Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Ohio University Southern Bowman Auditorium, the Ironton Council of the Arts presents Dr. Julio Riberio Alves, world-renowned classical guitarist and professor of guitar at Marshall University.
Admission is $10 and tickets may be purchased at the door by visiting the ICA website at www.ohio.edu/southern/events/ironton-arts-concerts/index.cfm. Ohio University students are admitted free with valid ID.
This Ironton Council for the Arts subscription concert replaces a Marshall University brass ensemble performance originally scheduled for this date. The ensemble was unable to perform due to a schedule conflict.
Guitarist Dr. Julio Ribeiro Alves has been a faculty member in the Marshall University School of Music and Theatre since 2006, where he oversees the guitar studio. He teaches applied classical guitar lessons, guitar literature, guitar pedagogy, guitar skills and guitar techniques. He also teaches music theory and directs the guitar ensemble.
Alves earned a doctor of music degree in guitar performance and music literature from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, a master of music degree in guitar performance from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor of music degree in guitar performance from the University of Brasilia, in his native country of Brazil.
He performs a wide variety of repertoire from various ethnicities and historical periods and has performed in Brazil, the United States, Argentina, Uruguay and Costa Rica.
Alves maintains an active performance schedule both as a soloist and as a member of several chamber ensembles. These include: the Violauta Duo, with flutist Wendall Dobbs; Duo Alves, with violinist Kristen Alves; and the Violautalino Trio, with Alves and Dobbs.
