SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers jumped out to a quick first half lead and never looked back as they rolled to a 35-7 win over the visiting Rock Creek Community Lions from Sellersburg, In.
For the Lions, this was their first game with the school starting the football program earlier this year.
South Point (1-1) got off to a quick start scoring on their first possession when Reed Murnahan capped a six-play, 78-yard drive with a 7-yard run.
Jordan Overstreet added the extra point to make the score 7-0 with 8:43 to go in the first quarter.
The drive was highlighted with two long pass plays of 17 and 38 yards.
Although Rock Creek lined up in a spread offense, the Lions played ball control with their first possession lasting nearly eight minutes. However, Rock Creek would turn the ball over on downs at their own 49-yard line.
South Point would extend the lead on a 28-yard pass from quarterback Brandin Jackson to William Borders. Overstreet added the extra point and the score was 14-0 with 9:36 to go in the first half.
After forcing a Rock Creek punt, the Pointers struck quickly as Hunter Starr scampered 47 yards into the end zone. Overstreet kicked the extra point to make the score 21-0 with 6:20 to go in the second quarter.
After gaining one first down, the Lions would be forced to punt.
South Point moved quickly once again when Murnahan got his second touchdown of the half, this one from 5 yards out and it was 28-0.
Rock Creek got the ball to start the second half, but an interception and return of 27 yards by Murnahan set the Pointers up with a first and goal at the Lions’ 5-yard line. Two plays later, Elijah Adams found the end zone from 2 yards out.
Overstreet got his fifth conversion and the score was 35-0 with 4:54 to go in the third quarter.
Rock Creek would find the end zone for the first time in their program’s history when Elijah Tooley capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive scoring from 7 yards out.
Trenton Dethy added the extra point to set the final score at 35-7.
