Joe Laber, the newest firefighter in the Ironton Fire Department, is excited to start his career after getting sworn in by Mayor Rich Blankenship Friday afternoon in front of his family, friends and the department.
“I’ve wanted to be a firefighter ever since I was a kid,” Laber said. “I’m looking forward to the comradery and being able to help the town.”
Laber was born and raised in Ironton and previously spent five years in the U.S. Army as well as working with his father at Second Street Auto Sales.
“We’re definitely looking forward to having him,” Capt. Mike Hasenauer, acting chief, said. “He seems to be excited about coming here and that’s what we like to see ourselves. He seems like he’ll fit in real well.”
Laber’s first day is Monday.
“It’s a good job for a good future,” Laber said.
Hasenauer also said the department hopes to add one more firefighter in the near future after two recent retirements.
