SOUTH POINT — Around 3 a.m. on Saturday crews from the Burlington-Fayette Township and Chesapeake-Union Township fire departments responded to a fire on Charley Creek Road off County Road 144 behind the former Kmart in South Point.
Lawrence County 911 dispatchers said two firefighters suffered minor injuries in a ceiling collapse while battling the blaze.
Some members of the Chesapeake-Union Fire Department on social media mentioned the dangers of fighting a fire in cold weather, posting that the 500-degree temperatures inside the house and the 15-degree temperatures outside made for dangerous conditions; firefighters’ wet gear would freeze seconds after exiting the house.
It is not known if the two-story home was occupied. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
The South Point Fire Department, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence County EMS were also on the scene.
