COAL GROVE — Jamie Murphy, president of the Dawson-Bryant Board of Education, has been appointed to the Ohio School Board Association’s Southeast Region Legislative Platform Committee.
“I’m honored to be voice on the committee not only for our entire school board but for the whole region,” Murphy said. “I’ll be there at the meetings and I’ll be heard. I’m excited about it.”
Murphy, a 10-year board member, received a letter on Dec. 3 from OSBA regional manager Paul Mock notifying her of the appointment and outlining the committee’s purpose. In the letter, Mock wrote that the Legislative Platform Committee, which comprises 25 members, five appointed from each of the OSBA’s five regions, develops a recommended legislative platform for consideration by the OSBA Delegate Assembly during the Capital Conference in November.
“(The committee) discusses any issues the districts may have with state regulations,” Murphy said. “Any and all input I will have will be geared toward the benefit of the students in our district. Many of the school districts in the southeast region face similar issues so I’m looking forward to the chance to discuss and network with other school board members.”
Mock said another Dawson-Bryant school board member served on an OSBA committee several years ago, but Murphy is the only Dawson-Bryant school board member ever to serve on the Legislative Platform Committee.
Dawson-Bryant Superintendent Steve Easterling said Murphy’s appointment to the committee is indicative of her dedication to the district.
“It will be a lot more work and a lot of sacrifice but she will do it if it will make our school district better,” Easterling said. “Her appointment means more representation on the committee from southern Ohio and gives our district the chance to have some input.”
Murphy’s appointment is for one year beginning Jan. 1.
