For many years William Joseph Williams Jr. was a very active member, officeholder and supporter of the Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade. After his death several years ago, parade officials have used his name on awards presented to parade supporters.
This year, Southern Ohio Amateur Radio Association public information officer Ken Massie was the recipient of this award, which reads: Award Presented to Ken Massie in appreciation for all your time, dedication and efforts in promoting the 146th Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade.
“This award was a complete surprise to me,” Massie said. “Monday morning when we were getting ready at the staging area to be net control, as I have done for many years, three parade officials arrived and presented the Joe Williams award to me.”
Massie, along with other SOARA ham radio operators provide communication during the parade.
