Pointers open with 4-1 win over Eagles

ASHLAND, Ky. — The South Point Pointers used strong pitching and timely hitting to beat the Fairview Eagles 4-1 Monday in their season opener.

Chris Woodard and Logan Wade combined on a four-hitter for the Pointers.

Woodard went four innings to get the win. He struck out eight, walked three and allowed just two hits and no runs.

Wade got the save with three innings of work. He fanned three, walked three, allowed two hits and gave up the only run.

The game was scoreless until the Pointers pushed across two runs in the fourth inning.

Trey Kearns, Tyler Branch and Brandon Layne all singled for a run. Christian Perdue walked and Patrick Jones singled in a run.

Fairview (1-5) got a run in the bottom of the fifth on walks to Austin Harris and Blake Smith, a single by Jesse Menshouse and Josh Russell’s sacrifice fly.

The Pointers (1-0) got a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth.

Perdue walked, Jones was hit by a pitch and Alex Whitt walked to load the bases. Brandon Boggs hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored and Logan Wade hit into another fielder’s choice for an RBI.

South Point had eight hits led by Jones who went 3-4 with a run batted in. Boggs, Wade, Kearns, Branch and Layne all had singles. Boggs, Wade and Layne had RBIs.

Menshouse was 2-4 for Fairview.
