Charlee McComas

Charlee Farley McComas, 85, of Aid, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in Madeira Health Care Center in Madeira. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Aid Cemetery.

Charlee was born March 24, 1928, in Cabell County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ott and Velva Workman Farley. She attended Barboursville High School, retired from Owens-Illinois Glass Manufacturing after 30 years of service and was a member of Order of Eastern Star Barboursville Chapter 95.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mike Farley and Ott Farley, Jr.; one sister, Elizabeth Romaine; and one niece. Charlee is survived by her sister, Georgia Diane Treftz of Terrace Park; two nieces; and three nephews.

Leona McClellan

Leona Edna Holtzapfel McClellan, 95, of Ironton, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Oak Mount Manor Nursing Home in Flatwoods, Ky. She was the wife of the late Charles Milton McClellan. She was born Feb. 20, 1918, to the late Andrew and Zona Holtzapfel.

She was a member of St. Lawrence Church. She was retired from Wilson’s Sporting Goods.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Christine Senters, Ada Krible, Mary Thomas, Minnie House and Helena Dixon; and two brothers, Carl and Leo Holtzapfel. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Kay McClellan and Frank and Barbara McClellan; and one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Frank Pierson, all of Ironton. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Church, Ironton, with Father David Huffman officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. with the Rosary starting at 9 a.m. at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

 

 

Adam Smith

Adam Scott Smith, 40, of Worthington, Ky., died in Cleveland Clinic on Sunday Sept. 29, 2013. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Carman Funeral Home-Flatwoods. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.carmanfuneral.com.

 

 

William Freeman

William F. Freeman, 92, the husband of the late Veronica (Aceto) Freeman died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Ironton on Dec. 23, 1920, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Lyons) Freeman. He was also predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Hall, and his brother, John Freeman.

Bill was the president of the Class of 1939 at Ironton High School. He attended Ohio State University and was forever a loyal Buckeye’s fan. He leaves many lifelong friends and a lifetime of fond memories from his days in Ironton.

He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps stationed in Sarasota, Fla., where he met and married Veronica, a Manchester, Conn., native. They returned to Manchester and built their own home on Avery Street.

Bill completed his education and received degrees from Willimantic State Teachers College and Hillyer College. He spent his career as a teacher and principal in several schools in Manchester including Robertson, Nathan Hale and Verplanck, where the school library is named in his honor.

Upon retirement Bill said, “They try to make this business too complicated. The relationship between the teacher and the child — that’s the real nuts and bolts of it.”

Bill was an active member of Second Congregational Church UCC where he served on many committees and boards. Bill was also a proud member of Manchester B.P.O.E. 1893.

He is survived by his loving daughters and sons-in-law, Colby Freeman and Peter Meisinger, and Dana and William McCarthy. He leaves his grandchildren Beri and John Williams, Shay and Jon Browne, Meg and Dan Goodstein and Ted and Mary McCarthy. He also leaves his adoring great-grandchildren Olivia and Luke McCarthy and several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by Veronica’s parents, Ralph and Mary Aceto, and her siblings, Russell Aceto and Joanne (Gene) Rossi.

The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff of Guardian Angels, A Caring Hand, Vitas Hospice and White Oaks who so lovingly cared for him for several months.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Second Congregation Church, UCC 385 N. Main St., Manchester, CT. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

William Dunfee

William H. Dunfee Jr., 89, formerly of South Point, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Visiting Nurse Hospice Home, Fort Wayne, Ind. Service was Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at the Church House, Grabill, Ind. Burial was in the Covington Memorial Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

 

 

Eloise Bland

Eloise R. Bland, 99, of Huntington, W.Va., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at The Wyngate. A graveside funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Eric Barnes, her nephew, at the Woodmere Memorial Park’s Abbey of Peace. Entombment will follow.

Eloise was born May 30, 1914, in Ironton, a daughter of the late Herman and Josephine Lambert Roberts. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence R. Bland; sister, Rosemary Littler and brother, Robert Roberts.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Huntington Museum of Art, the Women’s Club of Huntington, the Inwood Garden Club and the WV Garden Club.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey R. Bland and his wife Vicky of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Stephanie R. Brooks of Wilmington, Mark Bland of Beaufort, S.C., and Kyle Bland of New Albany; seven great-grandchildren, Alec and Allison Brooks, Andrew, Jeffrey, Melia, Tyler and Grace Bland; one brother, Edward Roberts, and one sister, Linda Barnes, both of Ironton.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the entire staff at The Wyngate of Barboursville for the loving care they provided. There will be no visitation prior to the service. Michael Gonzalez

Michael Gonzalez, 73, of Coal Grove, passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at the Fountainhead Nursing Home in Franklin Furnace. The Layland, W.Va., native was born Nov. 16, 1939, the son of the late Camilo and Rosa Ross Gonzalez. He is survived by his wife, Sally Ann Fox Gonzalez.

Mr. Gonzalez was a graduate of Meadowbridge High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former owner/salesman for the Jewel T Company and a member of the Ashland First Church of the Nazarene.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his step-mother, Vivian Gonzalez of Beckley, W.Va.; two daughters, Robyn (Steve) McIntosh of Nelsonville, and Rhonda Bryant of Ironton; two brothers, Andy (Janie) Gonzalez of Virginia and Ross (Jeannie) Gonzalez of West Virginia; four grandchildren, Ryan (Shanyl) Kittle, Jami Kittle, Scott Kittle, and Emileigh Bryant; and two great-grandchildren, Keegen Kittle and Grace Kittle.

Funeral services will be noon Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. John Euton officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Ronald Kelley

Ronald “Ronnie” Kelley, 79, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky. The Ironton native was born Jan. 25, 1934, a son to the late John and Susan (Dennin) Kelley. Mr. Kelley was also preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Phyllis (Mullins) Kelley, who passed away March 8, 2011.

Mr. Kelley was a 1953 graduate of Ironton High School. Ronnie went on to work as a laborer for Ironton Iron.

Ronnie is survived by a son, Ronald David Kelley, of Ironton.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Pine Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Cremeans officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ronald Day, 72, of Ironton, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2013, at the Sanctuary of Ohio Nursing Facility in Ironton. Arrangements are pending at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton.
