The Ohio University Community Band will perform as part of the Lawrence County 150th Anniversary of the Civil War Commemoration.
The band, directed by Dr. Pat McCoy, will perform Civil War music at 6 p.m. Monday at the Ohio University Southern Campus and Community Center in Ironton.
Following the band’s performance, McCoy will speak about the important role of music during the war.
Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
At 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Burlington Baptist Church in South Point, retired history professor Bob Leith will speak about the military battles and campaigns from Fort Sumter until the end of 1863. Admission to this event is also free.
“Last spring, a group of history enthusiasts from Lawrence County got together to discuss how the county could remember the 150th anniversary of the Civil War,” Dr. Steve Call, Ohio University professor and event coordinator, said. “New folks are always welcome and they just need to contact me.”
Plans are in the works for trips in 2014 and 2015 to Civil War-related destinations, Call said.
The Lawrence County Civil War Commemoration group is receptive to all ideas for activities, events and presentations. Ideas can be sent to Call by email at thetravelprofessor@gmail.com or by calling (740) 550-9540.
