City council set to meet Thursday

The agenda is short for Thursday’s Ironton City Council meeting, with four ordinances up for a vote.

The first is for an agreement with E.L. Robinson Engineering Company Inc. The contract between the city and the engineering firm is for general engineering services for city projects at a cost not to exceed $25,000.

The second ordinance on the agenda is a contract with Ironton Metropolitan Housing Authority to provide police protection on their properties. The authority will pay no more than $12,500 for the police services.

Another ordinance seeks to establish a police equipment replacement fund for the Ironton Police Department. The fund would go towards capital and equipment expensed and be funded through the collection of tow and storage fees and impound auction sales.

Another ordinance seeks to increase towing fees to $150 per vehicle and that a fee of $20 per day will be charged for the vehicle’s storage in the impound lot.

Of the $150 tow fee, $75 would be paid to the wrecker company and the remaining $74 plus storage fees would be deposited into the equipment fund.

Also on the agenda is an update from the Ohio Department of Transportation about the construction of the new Ironton-Russell Bridge.

Council will meet at 6 p.m. following a finance committee meeting at 5 p.m.

Play outside weekend on WNF

NELSONVILLE — In observance of National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) scheduled for Saturday, June 8, Wayne National Forest, in collaboration with local partners, is hosting Play Outside Weekend (POW) throughout the Marietta Unit of the Athens Ranger District to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. Activities start the evening of Friday, June 7 and run through the morning of Sunday, June 9.

Starting on Friday evening, join the Southeast Ohio Astronomical Society at Lamping homestead, known as one of the darkest spots in Ohio, for a night sky viewing aided by telescopes.

On Saturday, Leith Run Recreation Area (located north of Marietta on the Ohio River Scenic Byway) will be the center of most of the planned activities.

Daytime activities will include fishing, archery, orienteering, water safety, mountain bike skills, horseback riding, and disc golf. At the River Shelter, come learn about local land and water critters, touch live reptiles, and watch a raptor demonstration. On Saturday evening, enjoy a chicken dinner and bluegrass music, and a campfire complete with storytelling. The weekend will conclude with a birding hike Sunday morning (bring binoculars).
