The Elizabeth Township Volunteer Fire Department received a new-to-them fire truck Thursday to help protect and assist those they are responsible for.

Fire Chief David Waugh said the truck was purchased to take the place of an older vehicle that needed to be replaced due to a leaking tank and failing engine.

The 1990/91 E-One came in from Lancaster, Pa., and after he and his crew cleaned off the ice encrusting the truck Waugh said it was good to go.

“The truck came in around nine in the morning and by eight that evening it was filled with water and ready to fight fires,” Waugh said. “We hope we never have to take it out of course, but we have it set up to be the next one in line to go out when we get a call.”

Waugh said the truck was purchased after he and a fellow firefighter went to Lancaster to see it. They came back and then made a decision with the department’s board.

The volunteer fire department is made of up Waugh and approximately 18 other volunteer firefighters and covers the entire 52 square miles of land in Elizabeth Township.
