When it meets Thursday, Ironton City Council will consider a resolution to ask voters to continue a half-mil renewal levy to support the city’s recreation department.

The levy expires at the end of the year.

The replacement levy will be on the November ballot and would be for another five years. The resolution was first introduced at an earlier council meeting but Mayor Rich Blankenship asked that the resolution be removed at that time because the language contained some errors.

City council will also continue discussion of the refinancing of two bonds in an effort to save money. The bonds were used to finance the city center renovations and the new fire department.

Also, an ordinance executing an agreement with E.L. Robinson Engineering Company to design the North Fifth and Elm Street sewer separation project may be given second reading.

City council will meet at 6 p.m. At 5 p.m., the city will have a public hearing to allow public input on a proposal to re-zone a portion of a tract of land on Liberty Avenue adjacent to the University Mart, across from the main entrance to Ohio University Southern.

The lot is zoned mainly residential but a small portion is zoned commercial. Some residents contend the commercial designation was done in error and the entire property should be zoned residential, reflecting a deed restriction.

The owner of the property, Doug Philabaun, who owns the University Mart, contends the commercial designation should not be changed.
