Ironton City Council to consider repealing reciprocity agreement, raising the municipal fee

When Ironton City Council meets Thursday night, it will consider how to make ends meet in the 2012 budget.

Councilman Kevin Waldo has offered a resolution to raise the city’s municipal fee from $8 to $10 for two years, with the money going to the police department.

Waldo also sponsored an ordinance to repeal the city’s reciprocity agreement. Right now, people who live in Ironton but work outside the city in a municipality that also has a payroll tax are only required to pay half the city’s 1 percent tax. Both of those ordinances will get first reading.

Council will also consider giving first reading to an ordinance accepting Med Ben’s $1.43 health insurance offer for the coming year. Also on the agenda is an ordinance, sponsored by council members Aaron Bollinger, Bob Cleary, Mike Lutz and Beth Rist to provide additional police protection to Ohio University Southern.

Up for second reading is an ordinance that restricts dumping at the city garage and/or Rumpke recycling at the city’s expense to twice a year. Two ordinances dealing with contracts for purchasing chemicals and construction materials are also on the agenda for second reading.

An ordinance pertaining to the city’s contract with Ironton Little League may get third reading.

Finally, a resolution to apply for Natureworks funding through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Council will meet at 6 p.m. at the Ironton City Center. Just prior to this meeting, the city council finance committee will meet at 5 p.m. to continue discussion of the 2012 budget.
