Beast of the Southeast

The third annual Beast of the Southeast boys high school basketball classic will be held Saturday at Chesapeake High School.

The event begins at noon with South Point facing Lucasville Valley. Waverly and Athens play at 2 p.m. followed by Eastern Brown and Vinton County at 4 p.m., South Webster and Fairland at 6 p.m. and host Chesapeake goes against Russell, Ky., at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $7 each and are available in advance at Chesapeake High School or at the gate.

Lucasville Valley and Waverly share the Southern Ohio Conference lead. Valley features Blake Yates while Waverly has Jake Kretzer who has signed with Akron.

Eastern Brown returns four starters from last season and has always had a solid program.

South Webster is coached by former Chesapeake player and assistant Steven Ater. The Jeeps are led by Austin Loop who is an outstanding shooter.

South Point has a young team but they have an outstanding scoring tandem in Brandon Barnes and Austin Jeffreys.

Fairland is proving to be one of the area’s top teams led by 6-foot-4 senior Evan Salyers.

Chesapeake — ranked 7th in the AP poll — has All-Ohio forward Austin McMaster along with the long-range shooting of Eric Kennedy.
