SCOTTOWN — Normally, the atmosphere at R&R Carryout on Greasy Ridge (County Road 2) is quiet and neighborly. But Wednesday evening that changed when a bandana-clad man with a gun walked into the store and demanded owner Don Rigney’s money.

“This man came through the door with a bag in one hand and the other hand in his pocket,” Rigney recounted. The would-be robber told Rigney to put the store’s money in the bag.

“I told him ‘You’re kidding me, right,’” Rigney recalled. “And he said, ‘Put the money in the bag.’ I walked him to the door and I could tell he was nervous.”

The man produced a gun. “I didn’t know it at the time but it was a BB gun,” Rigney said.

Rigney managed to knock the gun out of the man’s hand and get the man outside where he toppled the would-be robber and the two began to scuffle. Two patrons were in the store at the time; Rigney said one began kicking the man while the other called 911.

“He took off. I got in my truck and went after him but he had a car parked over the hill,” Rigney recalled.

During the scuffle, the man’s hoodie and bandana he was wearing to conceal his identity came off. The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s, with blondish brown hair, 6 feet 2 inches tall with a slim build.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said efforts are being made to get a good photo of the suspect in hopes someone will recognize him.

The incident occurred just after 8 p.m. Wednesday. Lawless said the incident remains under investigation.
