Court sentences man for CCS violation, drug crimes

A Coal Grove man will spend the next four years in prison for getting kicked out the STAR Community Justice program.
David Turvey, 20, of 980 Township Road 111, was unsuccessfully discharged from STAR earlier this month for multiple violations, including displaying “criminogenic” behavior and lying to staff members.
For not completing the program, Judge Charles Cooper sentenced Turvey to four years in prison, giving him credit for time served. Once his prison sentence is complete, Turvey will not be under community-controlled sanctions.
A Kitts Hill man was also sentenced Wednesday, but for drug crimes.
James Curry, 42, of 2134 State Route 217, was sentenced to three years in prison for third degree trafficking in drugs and 18 months in prison for fourth degree trafficking in drugs.
Cooper ordered the sentences to run concurrently, for a total of three years.
Lisa Anne Stapleton, 34, of 1022 County Road 15, South Point, was also sentenced for drug crimes.
Cooper sentenced Stapleton to two and a half years for two counts of third degree aggravated trafficking in drugs and 18 months for a fourth degree felony of the same charge. The sentences will run concurrently for a total of two and a half years in prison.
In other cases:
Daniel L. Smith, 35, of 96 Township Road 1508, South Point, was arraigned on a fifth degree felony count and a misdemeanor count of criminal non-support.
Cooper set a $50,000 OR bond and set a pretrial for Dec. 14.
Charles Hobart, 52, of 515 Hawk St., Ironton, admitted to a CCS violation. Cooper sentenced him to eight months in prison.
Khara Karshner, 21, of 1418 Gallagher Drive, Ashland, Ky., was arraigned on a second-degree count of burglary and a fourth degree count of grand theft of a vehicle.
Karshner pleaded not guilty though her attorney Mike Davenport. Cooper set a $50,000 cash or surety bond and set a pretrial for Dec. 14.
Randall Conley, 44, of Flatwoods, Ky., was arraigned on one count of fifth degree theft.
Conley pleaded not guilty though his attorney Mike Gleichauf, who ask Cooper to consider a $5,000 bond.
Both Cooper and assistant prosecutor Brigham Anderson agreed to the bond.
Brittany Lyons, 22, of 105 Rowe St., Coal Grove, pleaded guilty to third degree escape.
Cooper sentenced her to one year in prison which would run consecutively with her original four-year sentence from previous drug crimes.
Brian Ferguson, 26, of 214 Pearl St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to two fifth degree counts of breaking and entering at the Shamrock Carryout and the West Ironton Elementary School building.
Cooper scheduled sentencing Jan. 4 following a pre-sentence investigation.
Shane Jenkins, 21, of 360 Township Road 11, Ironton, pleaded guilty to the second-degree burglary of an Oak Street residence.
