Cade is project manager

Ironton’s signalization project is expected to go bid beginning July 1, 2012, project manager and county engineer Doug Cade said.

When it’s completed, six intersections will have new traffic signals and increased turning radii. Those intersections are Park Avenue at Sixth, Fifth, Fourth, and Third streets and Adams Street at Second and Third streets.

The work will make the intersections compliant with curve standards, Cade said. The current signals are old and difficult to find replacement parts for, he added.

The construction should take about 90 days.

The signalization project is being paid for by Federal Highway Administration through the Kyova Interstate Planning Commission. The cost of construction and 80 percent of the engineering costs for the $1.5 million project are funded. The city will pay 20 percent or $24,000, of the engineering costs.

Tetra Tech is doing the engineering work, Cade said.

Cade, Lawrence County engineer, is taking the lead on the project at no cost to the city through an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Ironton and Lawrence County, Mayor Rich Blankenship said.

The mayor said he thinks the agreement shows that the county and city governments work well together.

Cade said that as county engineer he has a responsibility not only to villages and townships but also to the city of Ironton.
