Reds’ select Stephenson

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Reds’ senior director of amateur scouting Chris Buckley said the team selected 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher Robert Stephenson from Alhambra High School in Martinez, CA., with the team’s first pick (27th overall) of the first-year player draft.

The Reds will select their second player with the draft’s 84th overall pick Tuesday when round two begins at noon. The first 30 rounds will be completed Tuesday. Rounds 31-50 are scheduled for Wednesday.

Stephenson, 18, in 13 regular season appearances for Alhambra went 7-2 with a 1.33 ERA, 132 strikeouts and just 23 walks and 29 hits allowed in 64.0 innings. He was rated by Baseball America as the 25th-best prospect in the 2011 draft.

According to Baseball America, Stephenson began this season with back-to-back no-hitters and has touched 97 on the radar gun.
