Relay events show how to lend a hand

Nothing brings out creativity like a good cause. And there is perhaps none better than the fight against cancer.

The Relay has been a strong project here for years, topping more than $100,000 each of the past few years. Every penny will go to the American Cancer Society’s research efforts to find better treatments, and ultimately, a cure for the disease that has touched everyone’s life in some way.

With Lawrence County’s Relay for Life fast approaching, the various teams are coming up with clever ways to raise money for this important event.

Watch out because you might wake up to find dozens of pink flamingoes in your yard.

The fundraiser by the Faithful Fighters Relay team involves sticking dozens of the plastic birds in an unsuspecting person’s yard.

The “victim” has to pay a minimum of $10 to have the birds moved to another person’s lawn.

Creative but all for a good cause.

The Ohio University Southern Student Relay for Life Team is “Jazzed for a Cure,” or at least will be Thursday, April 28 at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Arts Center.

In the jazz concert that doubles as a dessert tasting, OUS professor Kim Keffer will perform the music of such great American composers as Cole Porter, Louis Armstrong, Harold Arlen and Hoagie Carmichael.

Both these events show how small groups can make a big difference when working toward a common goal.
