PORTSMOUTH — By staying ahead, Rachel Murnahan was able to leave the Portsmouth Lady Trojans behind.
Murnahan pitched a one-hitter Monday as the South Point Lady Pointers beat the Lady Trojans 13-0 in a five-inning game.
“Rachel did a fantastic job of getting ahead of each batter and getting some routine ground balls for the infield,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Tara Layne.
Murnahan allowed only a single to Brit Webb in the bottom of the fifth inning. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Ashley Goodall led the Lady Pointers’ 10-hit attack as she went 2-4 with a triple and two runs batted in.
“We are playing very good softball right now. Our defense also did a great job of getting the lead runners out each inning.”
South Point (9-1) got two runs in the second inning when Andrea Kleinman doubled and courtesy runner Allison Mitchell scored on a hit by Kaitlyn Brown. After Brown stole second and went to third on an error, Brianna Whaley hit a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Pointers settled the outcome as they erupted for 10 runs in the third inning.
Kayla Fletcher singled and Goodall had her RBI triple. Kleinman walked and Murnahan had a run-scoring hit. Brown walked and Hannah Carey singled in a run.
Whaley and Fletcher walked, Katelynn Leonard reached on an error, Goodall had another RBI single and two errors sent home the final runs.
South Point got its final run in the fourth.
The Lady Pointers visit Oak Hill Tuesday. The Lady Oaks gave South Point its only loss this season.
